Aaargh!  Someone commented to me that some of the songs we sing are unscriptural … for those of you who know me, you know I go through the lyrics of our songs with a fine toothed comb to make sure they are full of rich, true and meaningful gospel centered content … so I was fascinated … and then incredibly heart broken and disturbed to find that he was correct and speaking of one of my favorite songs, here is the chorus of it:

Beautiful Scandalous Night

At the wonderful tragic mysterious tree
On that beautiful scandalous night
You and me were atoned by His blood
And forever washed white
On that beautiful scandalous night

Words & Music by Derald Daugherty, Steve Hindalong © 1995 New Spring

I absolutely love the juxtaposition of wonderful, tragic, mysterious, beautiful and scandalous (isn’t the gospel all of that) …

but it wasn’t night!  AAAARGH!

It was the middle of the day.  It got dark … but it was day time.

Can we say that it was figuratively the darkest day of humanity … therefore night?

I don’t know.  Matthew 27 shows clearly that it happened in the middle of the day … his body hung there until evening and then was taken down.

Did it happen at night?  Not really.

Nooooo!  What say all of you? Is this a big deal?

I say in this case, ignorance is bliss!
Take it as poetic license, loveliness, and figure of speech; let the exact time of day sit in the audience and enjoy it.

I think it’s sad that it isn’t accurate but… Is there a reason why the accuracy of the time of day matters in the grand scheme of things? Or can it be overlooked? Argh… that bugs me now. I’m gonna tell Sam…

I thought it spoke of the night you and me were atoned by his blood, not the day that Jesus died on the cross. Is it not how we interpret the words?

( It should be you and I of course but what else can you expect from a retired teacher!!!!)
